A few months ago, I wrote a piece for Vibe Fridays: Daniel Caesar – Get You. In it I talked about Daniel Caesar, a relatively unknown from Toronto with buttery smooth vocals, church background, and soulful lyrics about love and life. Today I’ll talk about his debut album, Freudian.
I have a confession to make. As much as I was a blog rat from 2008-2012, I’ve never listened to Odd Future (or Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All). I had no desire for Tyler the Creator or Earl Sweatshirt. The first album I listened to by their affiliates were Frank Ocean (nostalgia,ULTRA) and The Internet (Purple Naked Ladies). I always felt that their non-rap acts had stronger appeal for me but the first time I heard The Internet, I was addicted.
I took my three months into 2016 but I finally am finishing this series. I have so much more music to talk about from this year already. Like the last few times, this is my personal favorite soul albums of 2016, not necessarily the best. This one is specifically not in order, they all roughly rotated between each other all year round. If you haven’t, check out my series for favorite hip-hop and R&B albums also.
In the spirit of wrapping these lists up before I end up writing about 2016 all 2017. I am going to shorten my lists and condense my R&B and Soul lists from ten each to two lists of five. R&B today and Soul next week. Like last time, these are not the BEST albums of 2016, but some of my favorites. These are the projects that I went back and listened to the most in 2016, whether I wanted to or not. Enjoy. Continue reading “My Favorite R&B Projects of 2016”
